The topic I have decided to cover in my essay for our final writing project is that of the first Pride celebration and parade. While AP US History classes cover the "Lavender Scare" alongside the women's rights and anti-war protests respectively, I personally found there to be little attention paid to the details and joyous triumphs of LGBTQ+ people of the past, even though such amazing victories in progressing awareness and pride for this group exist and persist into the present day. I believe that this topic is a good candidate for re-evaluation because although history is filled to bursting with sadness and misery for oppressed groups such as the LGBTQ+, it is imperative that we educate on their given triumphs amongst their negative circumstances, as they are exemplifications of their extraordinary perseverance and strength.
