In communities such as that of Syracuse, whose predominantly non-white, lower class community was irrevocably ravaged by the elitist city planning agenda of highway construction, the only form of viable amends would be deconstruction of the fruitless efforts to "better" the city as well as reasonable reparations to those displaced by the original situation and their families. The allocation of funds towards building family-friendly, community-uniting spaces such as gardens, safe main streets, and parks do not gentrify, but cultivate family-friendly centers of growth and stability for future generations.

Though a considerably and understandably difficult subject, monetary reparations are some of the only truly helpful forms of amends for displaced communities. In today's disgustingly capitalist society, things like plaques, statues, and speeches are an annoyance when considering the fact that those in charge of putting them in place did not consider actively assisting the effected communities. Sentimental forms of amends do not do as much to help as monetary forms, and oftentimes come off as misplaced or inappropriate given the situation.

  2. I completely agree Santana! I'm also arguing that reparations are the only sufficient means to to make amends with a displaced community. Statues and monuments seem performative to me, and I'd much rather see something put in effect that would actually be beneficial to the displaced people. Looking forward to your final paper.

  3. I think the point you make about monetary reparations being the only that matter today is completely, yet sadly, accurate. These days, statues and plaques really do not do or signify anything and feed into performative activism as a whole. I think that one thing you can expand upon in your paper would be to detail the exactly specific monetary reparations that need to be made and how they would be done.
